■ CM Nitish Kumar launched the Bal Hriday Yojana (BHY)

BHY will provide free treatment to children suffering from the medical condition of a hole in the heart or Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).

The scheme started from 1st of April 2021 but was launched on 2nd April by flagging off a bus carrying 21 children with VSD condition, along with their guardians, to the Patna airport to be flown to Ahmedabad (Gujarat) for specialized treatment at Prashanti Medical Services and Research Foundation hospital.

This scheme has been linked with the government’s Seven Resolves’ Programme-2 (Saat Nishchay – 2).

■ From 1st April 2021, the state government has increased the scholarship amount for unmarried Intermediate examination pass and graduate girls to ₹25,000 and ₹50,000, respectively under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Uttan Yojana.

There has been 100% increase in the amount of money given under this scheme.

■ Gandhian thinker and follower of Vinoba Bhave, Dwariko Sundarani passed away.

He has been empowering the tribal and local communities in Gaya for the last 58 years in Bihar at Samanvay Ashram.

■ Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad was granted bail in fodder scam case.

The case pertains to the fraudulent withdrawal of ₹ 3.5 crore from the Dumka treasury by Animal Husbandry Department officials between 1991 and 1996, when he was the Chief Minister of Bihar.

■ Bihar was ranked 6th among the 29 states in the State-level Vulnerability Indices developed by the National Climate Assessment Report, released by DoS&T.

Jharkhand is the highest vulnerable state w.r.t. current climate risks in India.

■ In Bihar oxygen plants will be set up in 15 districts of the state to meet the demand of medical oxygen across the state.

 These plants will be set up under PM Cares Fund.

■ Bihar government has decided to provide bonus salary of one month to all healthcare workers this year.

■ The design plan of an elevated corridor faced criticism, which proposed the demolition of the Lord Curzon Reading Room of the Khuda Baksh Oriental Library. The corridor proposes to link Patna’s Kargil Chowk to the National Institute of Technology.

Khuda Baksh Oriental Library was opened for public in October, 1891 by Khan Bahadur Khuda Bakhsh. It’s an autonomous organization under Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India (GoI), and is governed by a Board with the Governor of Bihar as its ex officio Chairman. GoI declared the Library an Institution of National Importance by an act of Parliament in 1969.

Library is known for its rare collection of Persian and Arabic manuscripts. It also hosts paintings made during the Rajput and Mughal eras of India.

One of its manuscripts is inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, and three more identified as Vigyan Nidhi, by the (Union) Ministry of Culture.

■ Former CBI Director Ranjit Sinha passed away.

He was 1974 batch (Bihar cadre) Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and handed law and order in multiple districts in Bihar, Sinha also headed the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

12 Panchayati Raj Institutions(PRIs) of Bihar had been selected for the National Award 2021.

These include 7 Gram Panchayats, 4 Panchayat Samiti and 1 Zilla Parishad. The award was given to these Panchayati Raj Institutions by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India on the 12th National Panchayati Raj Day held virtually on 24th  April, 2021. 

For the first time, Prime Minister  transferred the award money (as Grants-in-Aid) directly to the bank account of the Panchayats concerned in real-time.

■ Former Hajipur MLA Jagannath Rai dies of Corona.

He contested for Assembly Election on Congress ticket for the last time in 2015.

■ On 23rd April CM Nitish Kumar paid tribute to Veer Kunwar Singh on his jayanti. On this date in 1858, Singh had a victory near Jagdispur over the force led by Captain le Grand.

Kunwar Singh’s armed soldiers routed the Company’s troops killing about 130 out of 300 men including Captain le Grand.

Kunwar Singh died of injuries on 26th April 1858.

■ Recently, Maithili litterateur Pandit Chandranath Mishra Amar died.

He was the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi award for his 1982 work Maithili Patrakaritak Itahas.

He also won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Fellowship for the year 2010.

Sahitya Akademi Award of 2020 were announced in the previous month and three litterateurs from Bihar were among 20 selected awardees.

  •  Anamika has became the first woman litterateur in the country to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award, for her Hindi poetry collection टोकरी में दिगन्त : थेरीगाथा (Tokri Mein Digant: Therigatha) 
  • Kamalkant Jha has received the Sahitya Akademi Award of Maithili Language for his short stories → Gachh Roosal Achhi
  • Hussain-ul-Haque has received the Sahitya Akademi Award of Urdu Language for his novel→ Amawas Mein Khwab.

About, Sahitya Akademi Award: Est. in 1954 it’s a literary honour that is conferred annually on Indian writers for their outstanding works of literary merit in 24 languages ( 22 from 8th  Schedule + English + Rajasthani).

The award is presented in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper-plaque, a shawl and a cheque of ₹ 1 lakh. 

It is the 2nd highest literary honour after Jananpith award.

Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) reduced power tariff by 10 paise per unit across all the categories of consumers and introduced metered connections even for people living below poverty line (BPL).

BERC has reduced power tariff for the first time in 15 years of its existence.

■ BJP MLA from Jamui and ace international shooter Shreyasi Singh has won the gold medal in the women's trap team event of ISSF Shooting World Cup, held in Delhi.

In order to provide better power transmission to Nepal, Bihar State Power Transmission Company Limited, (BSPTCL) is constructing two power transmission lines.

The first transmission line of 132 kV is built at a cost of ₹ 3.19 Crore at Kataya-Kushsha while the second transmission line of same voltage level in under construction at Raxaul-Parvanipur at the cost of ₹ 24.55 crore.

At present, Bihar transfers 441MW (megawatt) of power to Nepal.

Ex-chief of Sahasthra Seema Bal (SSB) Arun Chaudhary dies of Covid.

He was 1977-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre and served in Intelligence Bureau for two decades.

■ COVID scenario in Bihar is worsening as the second wave goes rural. As of now, Bihar has over 1 lakh active cases. Patna tops the chart with over 17,000 active cases during the current wave.

This is more alarming than compared with the peak of first wave in September 2020, when Bihar observed 12,686 active cases, with Patna being the highest at 1981 cases.

■ The State Government has declared few more government hospitals as dedicated hospitals for COVID-19 treatment, these include- Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JLNMCH) at Bhagalpur,  Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College (ANMCH) at Gaya, and Shree Krishna Medical College Hospital, Muzaffarpur.

Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) at Patna was the first dedicated COVID hospital in Bihar.
