■ The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has selected 21 institutions, including

All India Institute of Medical Sciences-Patna (AIIMS-P) for the clinical trial of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin on children between the age group of 2 and 18 years.

Earlier, AIIMS-P had successfully conducted the clinical trials of 1690 volunteers above the age of 18 years.

Bihar chief secretary Arun Kumar Singh succumbs to Covid-19. Singh, a 1985 batch IAS officer, had taken over as state chief secretary this February. 

Earlier, he had served as development commissioner.

Now, Tripurari Sharan has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Bihar.

■ Famous litterateur and singer Dr. Shanti Jain passed away. She wrote the famous Bihar Gaurav Gaan  'दिशा-दिशा में लोकरंग का तार-तार है’ ‘महका-महका सोंधी माटी का बिहार है' in 1997. She was honoured with the Padmashri award in 2020.

■ On the request of the Bihar government, Army sent over 300 medical staff for Patna Covid facility. 
Medical personnel includes super specialists, medical officers, nursing officers and paramedical staff on emergency basis to work at ESI Hospital Patna, where a 500-bed facility for Covid patients is reportedly being set up with the help of the DRDO.

 

 

 

 

Bihar and Jharkhand Association of North America (BJANA), led by Dr Avinash Gupta and several Indian-American doctors is using the internet and apps to provide free healthcare and consultancy to those who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The doctors are available on ‘Pran Covid-19 Helpline’ and also organise Zoom sessions. BJANA has also tied up with two local NGOs - Aashtha and Asha to support this cause.

■ Dr Mohan Mishra passed away. He was awarded the Padma Shri award in the year 2014 for doing research on Kala-azar.

Dr Ravindra Nath Shrivastava passed away. Shrivastava, also known as Dr Ravindra Rajhans, was a retired professor of English and a renowned author, satirist and poet.

He was awarded Padma Shri for his contribution to Hindi literature in 2009.

His famous book Sunrise in Slums, an anthology of poems was based on the lives of unprivileged children, in 2014.

■ According to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) COVID-19 registry, Bihar saw the maximum number of deaths of medical practitioners in the country.

 

 

 

 

■ Bihar Health Department has seek to open a molecular genome laboratory at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna under Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) programme.

INSACOG is a grouping of 10 National Laboratories that was established by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GoI on 25 Dec 2020. INSACOG is since then carrying out genomic sequencing and analysis of circulating COVID-19 viruses, and correlating epidemiological trends with genomic variants. Recently, it has shared analysis on B.1.617 lineage of SARS CoV-2 which is seen prevalent in India.

■ As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bihar ranked 1st in the country in vaccinating the 18-44 age group

Bihar Government launched the vaccination drive for 18-44 age group from 9th May 2021.

 

 

 

 

■Seen rise in the cases of mucormycosis or black fungus, Bihar Government supplied Ambisome (Liposomal amphotericin B) injections to all government-run medical colleges and hospitals in the state.

■ Bihar government would appoint one lakh teachers in primary and secondary schools after getting a nod from the Patna High Court.

 

 

 

 

■ Bihar government is paying a sum of ₹ 4 lakh as ex-gratia to the next kin of each person who died of Covid-19 in the state from the CM relief fund.

 Bihar government has decided to run mobile vaccination centres by the name Tika Express. Tika Express will go to remote rural areas and vaccinate the people against COVID-19.

■ CM Nitish Kumar flags off mobile testing vans to speed up COVID-19 RTPCR test in rural areas. These vans will test around 1000 suspected cases per day and people will get their reports within 24 hours.

 

 

 

 

■ Tropical cyclone Yaas leaves seven dead in Bihar and inundated low-lying areas. Bihar  government announced an ex gratia of ₹4 lakh to the next kin of the deceased.

Yaas was named by Oman; originated from the Persian language and mean Jasmin in English.

•It was classified as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS). •It made landfall south of Balasore in Odisha

Affected Areas: India →Andaman and Nicobar Islands, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh; Bangladesh and Nepal.

■ CM Nitish Kumar launched HIT COVID App to reach out to coronavirus patients undergoing treatment for the deadly disease in home isolation.

The HIT App has been developed by the Bihar State Electronics Development Corporation (BELTRON) under the guidance of the health department.

Bihar Startup Fund Trust (BSFT) gave its consent to 20 new stratups and also gave approval to 209 new startup ideas which will be associated with incubators for further development.

BSFT also gave its nod for a proposal for preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) by the IIT Patna for setting up an integrated startup complex.

According to Bihar Startup Policy 2017, till now 185 Startups have been authenticated.

■ Two kids diagnosed with Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) in Bihar.
Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a condition where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs.

The cause of MIS-C is still unknown. However, it’s found that many children with MIS-C had the virus that causes COVID-19, or had been around someone with COVID-19.

MIS-C can be serious, even deadly, but most children who were diagnosed with this condition have gotten better with medical care.

■  First consignment of GI certified Shahi Litchi (royal litichis) from Bihar was exported to the United Kingdom.

The phyto-sanitary certification for exports of Shahi Litchi was issued from newly established certification facility at Patna.

GI registration for Shahi Litchi is held with the Muzaffarpur-based Litchi Growers Association of Bihar.

To date, 13 Products from Bihar has got GI certification, these are as follows:

■ Amid COVID pandemic, Darbhanga airport has become the third busiest airport in the Eastern region after Kolkata and Patna airport.

Despite very few flights, around 2.21 lakh passengers have travelled from Darbhanga airport during last six months till May 22, surpassing Raipur and Bhubaneswar airport in terms of passenger footfall.

■ Bihar Govenrment will financially support children those who have lost their parents due to COVID-19. Under Bal Sahayta Yojana, those children who have lost their both parents or, at least one parent has died due to corona, the State government will provide them ₹1,500 each month till the age of 18.

CM Nitish Kumar announced orphaned children who are left with no guardian to bring them up will be provided shelter at Baal Griha (children's homes). Priority will be accorded to get such orphaned girls admitted to Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya schools.

Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH) in Bhagalpur, has been offered scientific support from the Yale University (USA) for saliva-based Covid test.

Yale University was made aware of surge in COVID-19 cases in the eastern region of Bihar through Friends of Bhagalpur working in the USA.

Saliva-based Covid test is designed to detect nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2 in saliva. It doesn’t require collection tubes with preservatives and has replaced the nucleic acid extraction with a simple enzymatic and heating step. This approach enables labs to utilise existing infrastructure and mass testing can be performed with limited investment.
