Swachh Survekshan-2022 (SS-2022) Ranking Report

The 7th edition of Swachh Survekshan-2022 report was released by the Union Ministry of housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). This year’s Survekshan was participated by 4,355 cities. President Droupadi Murmu felicitated the awardees of the cleanest States and cities at the award ceremony of Azadi@75 Swachh Survekshan 2022 hosted as part of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 at Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi.  India celebrated 8 years of Swachh Bharat Mission and the first anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) -Urban 2.0.

 • For the sixth consecutive year, Indore has emerged as India’s Cleanest City, in the ‘more than 1 lakh population category.

Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh received the best city award in Safai Mitra Suraksha.

• India’s ‘Cleanest Mega City’ with a population above 40 lakh award is given to Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

Haridwar in Uttarakhand ranked first for the best Ganga town in more than one lakh population cities.

Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh stood first in the best Ganga Towns in less than one lakh population cities.

Shivamogga in Karnataka received India’s Fastest moving city award.

Indore emerged as India’s first 7-Star Garbage Free city.

Surat, Bhopal, Mysuru, Navi Mumbai, Vishakhapatnam, and Tirupati earned 5-star Garbage Free certifications.

Madhya Pradesh emerged as the ‘Cleanest State’ in the category of more than 100 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

Tripura emerged as the Cleanest State award in the less than 100 ULBs category.

Deolali CANTT in Maharashtra emerged as India's Cleanest Cantonment.

• In Swachh Survekshan 2021 a new category of awards known as the Prerak DAUUR Sammaan was introduced. The Prerak DAUUR Samman has a total of five additional sub-categories viz., Divya (Platinum), Anupam (Gold), Ujjwal (Silver), Udit (Bronze) & AaRohi (Copper) to further motivate the competition among the States. This new category has categorised cities on the basis of six select indicator-wise performance criteria.

The SS-2022 has categorized Indore, Surat and Navi Mumbai as ‘Divya’ (Platinum).

Bihar's Data:

• Bihar was ranked 11th among 13 States having more than 100 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

Patna was ranked first in the State while 38th in the country among all 45 urban local bodies (ULBs) with a population of more than 10 lakh, based on various cleanliness and sanitation parameters. Patna is the only city from Bihar to make its position in the National Ranking of Cities with more than 10 Lakh population. It has improved by six notches from the previous SS-2021 at 44.

• Out of 382 cities with a population of 1Lakh -10 Lakh, 25 cities of Bihar have made their place in it. Within this ranking, Gaya from the state has stood first with a national rank of 179.

Supaul stood 1st in the State and 11th in the Country while Sultanganj stood 2nd in the State and 20th in the Country, out of 56 cities with 50 thousand to one lakh population.

Manihari, a town and a notified area in Katihar district, was adjudged as the 'fastest moving city' in the east zone, with a population of 25 thousand- 50 thousand category. It is the only city from Bihar which has got the award in 'Swachh Survekshan Awards 2022'.

Danapur CANTT. with 32nd rank is the only ULB in Bihar that lies in the category of Cantonment Boards.

Munger stood 1st in the State and 5th in the Country in the best Ganga Town in more than 1Lakh population category.

The other best Ganga towns (>1L population) from Bihar are, Hajipur 6th, Bhagalpur 7th , Buxar 8th , Patna 9th , Begusarai 10th , Jamalpur 12th, Chapra 17th and Danapur 37th .

Sultanganj stood 1st in the State and 4th in the Country in the best Ganga Town in less than 1Lakh population category.

The other best Ganga towns (<1L population) from Bihar are, Barahiya 12th, Barh 15th , Kahalgaon 17th , Sonepur 21st , Fatwah 28th ,Bakhtiarpur 32nd and Mokameh 43rd .

113 ULBs from Bihar have been granted ODF status, 15 ODF+ and 1 ODF++ status.

• For the first time in Bihar, Patna has been included in the list of ODF++. Patna Municipal Corporation received 600 points in this category.

Note: Bihar's Sitamarhi was the first ODF district in the State.

Supaul is the first Garbage Free City (GFC) in Bihar with a 1-Star rating.

• No cities from Bihar have received Water+ and Prerak DAUUR Sammaan.

ODF (Open Defecation Free): Focuses on not a single person is found defecating in the open and an individual has access to a toilet nearby.

ODF+: Focuses on cleanliness and sustainability of Community and Public Toilets

ODF++: Focuses on cleanliness and sustainability of Community and Public Toilets, along with safe containment, processing and disposal of faecal sludge and septage.

Water+ : Focuses on ensuring that no untreated wastewater is discharged into the open environment, adequate capacity of wastewater and sewage treatment facilities is to be ensured, the infrastructure should be maintained properly, and cost recovery is ensured through reuse / recycling of treated wastewater to ensure sustainability.
